Some questions you might have

  • Art therapy is a transformative healing modality that uses creative expression to support emotional and psychological growth. It’s not about creating “perfect” art—it’s about using art as a tool to access emotions, release trauma, and foster self-discovery. By engaging the senses and the body, art therapy provides a safe space for healing that words alone can’t always offer.

Art therapy connects with the right brain, which taps into creativity, intuition, and deep emotional insight. This makes it an especially powerful tool for those who have experienced trauma, as it bypasses the limitations of verbal processing and speaks directly to the body’s wisdom. In our sessions, we’ll use art to explore your inner world, allowing you to gain new perspectives, heal emotional wounds, and deepen your self-awareness.

No prior art experience is necessary—art therapy honors the inherent creativity in everyone and invites you to express yourself in a way that feels authentic and freeing. Whether you’re dealing with stress, trauma, grief, or any other challenge, art therapy offers a gentle yet profound path toward healing and transformation.

  • Yoga therapy uses the principles of yoga to help with specific health issues by customizing practices like postures, breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, education, chanting, imagery, and mindfulness based on each person's unique spiritual, mental, or physical goals. It comes from the Ayurvedic health system and can be used for prevention, restoration, relief, and healing.

The focus of yoga therapy is on making your journey towards healing a balanced experience for both body and mind. This empowering approach helps people shift their relationship with and perception of their health challenges.

Yoga Psychology offers a holistic and supportive way to nurture personal growth through self-acceptance, self-trust, and taking responsibility for one’s well-being. It encourages balance between the more emotional (right brain) and logical (left brain) aspects of ourselves. In essence, Yoga Psychology is about transforming our lives by integrating these different parts of ourselves.

  • Marina works in a client-led, trauma-informed way, meaning she comes to sessions prepared to support your therapeutic goals, and that she is skillfully following your lead moment to moment during sessions. You will be offered choices and we will never go anywhere you don't want to. The following information will lead you through what a typical session with me could look like, but please keep in mind that everyone is unique and that it is important for me to follow your natural rhythms, working within your range of comfort.

Each session has a beginning, middle, and end. At the start of each session I will check-in with how you are doing. I often use questions involving metaphor to gain enhanced meaning. From there, we may move into a discussion or I may offer a tool such as breathwork, movement or psychoeducation. The middle of the session is where you are invited into a creative process. I'll offer at least one art invitation for you to choose, but spontaneous art making is always encouraged. Your art process could be anything you wish, from poetry or journalling, to painting, to sculpture - anything is possible! After art making, there is an opportunity for self-reflection and sharing about your process. This portion of the session can offer profound insights and integration.  To close the session, I offer one more question, inviting you to sum up your experience. From there we might look at booking you in for your next appointment, before saying farewell.

Sessions can be varying lengths depending on age, capacity, and availability, but are typically 60-90 minutes. I recommend a commitment of at least 6 sessions and that we meet on a regular basis to allow your psyche to settle into a routine, supporting your growth and well-being.

  • As with everything in life, there are positives and negatives with online therapy. The benefits include accessibility, convenience, comfort, and anonymity. Online therapy can be accessed from the comfort of your own home, or any quiet, private location with internet connection, making it easier for people with mobility issues or people living in remote areas to receive support. Since online therapy doesn't require travel time, it can more easily fit into your schedule.  Many people feel more relaxed and open when they are in a familiar and comfortable space, which can enhance the therapeutic experience. For those who are hesitant about seeking help, online therapy can provide a greater sense of anonymity and privacy, reducing the stigma associated with mental health treatment. Working online allows me to work with wonderful individuals from anywhere in the world, like you, and opens you up to a wider range of therapists who offer unique approaches, like myself.

When it comes to materials, your imagination is your greatest tool. You don't need any fancy new art materials, you can work with what you've got! Simply a pencil and paper will do. Of course if you're excited about getting yourself a new art material or book, feel free to treat yourself! You might work with drawing, painting, collage, or sculpting materials. Work with what you're drawn to or what you have access to. I have a list of art and recyled materials I can send to you upon request.

You are encouraged to have a safe space where you can store your art, such as a book, a box, or a shelf, for example.

  • Choosing between in-person and online art therapy is a personal decision that depends on what feels best for you. The most important aspect of therapy is ensuring you have a safe and comfortable space to explore your thoughts and feelings.

If you're located in Revelstoke, I would love to meet with you in person at my office. I aim to create a nurturing and welcoming environment for our sessions together. Meeting face-to-face can foster a strong therapeutic relationship and allows for mor direct guidance during the art-making process, movement invitations, or in times of emotional release. Having a dedicated space where you can come to can feel like "time-outside-of-time", like you get to step out of your life for a while, entering into a special healing cocoon, and emergng somehow transformed.

On the other hand, online art therapy offers its own set of advantages. It provides convenience and flexibility, allowing you to join sessions from the comfort of your own home. This option can be especially appealing if you have a busy schedule or if travel is a concern. It is important to consider your technology and to keep in mind that issues outside of our control may aries. You are encouraged to create a safe haven for yourself where you won;t be interrupted, and rituals to let your psyche know that our online sessions are sacred and transformational.

Ultimately, your choice should reflect what makes you feel the most safe and supported. Take some time to consider what environment helps you feel comfortable to express yourself. Whether you chose to meet in person or online, I am here to support you on your healing journey.
